This paper reviews the training requirements for the refractories industry, on both a technical and practical level. This requirement is then compared to the actual state of such training within the Australian industry and the shortcomings highlighted. Reference is made to the efforts made by the Institute of Refractories Engineers to alleviate similar shortcomings in the UK environment and the possibilities offered by such action on the local scene.
