內(nèi)容簡介Vermiculite is a member of the phyllosilicate or sheet silicate group of minerals. The phyllosilicate group of minerals has several important sub-groups, including the micas, clay minerals and the chlorite group. Vermiculite is classified as a variety of the mica sub-group. In its macroscopic form vermiculite has been known for nearly 180 years, but it can also be identified as a constituent of some clay mineral assemblages. However, in the commercial field, rather than as a pure mineralogical definition, the term vermiculite can be applied to a range of hydrated ferromagnesian aluminium sheet silicates. Commercial vermiculites are characterised as having the remarkable ability of being able to undergo thermal exfoliation, a process whereby the vermiculite ore is thermo-processed to yield a commercially important low density, granular product, which is used by a diverse range of industries.
