For the main purpose of suppressing the radiated heat loss from furnaces and ladles, a study was conducted to lower the thermal conductivity of MgO-C bricks. The work resulted in a lower thermal conductivity MgO-C brick that also has good thermal shock resistance. The improvements were accomplished by (1) decreasing the graphite content for lower thermal conductivity and (2) applying a pitch coating on the magnesia grains to improve the spading resistance.
