Molten aluminum, which has a high chemical affinity for oxygen, forms a unique oxide phase called "Obake", in the Al-Si-O system. Obake was observed to form in lab studies, only when Si was present both in the aluminum alloy and the reaction crucible. Comparing the chemical composition of the Obake formed in an industrial furnace with that of molten aluminum in a castable crucible, the Si in the Obake was derived from both the castable crucible and the molten aluminum. The ratios of Si to Al in the molten aluminum and the Obake were Si : Al = 5 : 89 and Si: Al = 11: 51, respectively. The essential condition for the formation of Obake was a constant supply of SiO (g). The molten aluminum reacted with SiO (g) according to the reaction, SiO_2(s) + 2 Al (1) = SiO (g) + Al_2O (g). Under the appropriate oxygen partial pressure, Si(l) in the molten aluminum reacted with A1_2O (g) to form SiO (g). The presence of SiO (g) was observed in an industrial furnace test, which showed increased Si in the Obake that was formed. Furthermore, Obake grew when its surface was wet by molten aluminum, that is, the contact angle between Obake and molten aluminum was reduced.
